You might have noticed it — that chest pocket on your new suit jacket is sewn shut. You look closer. You tug at it. You wonder: Is this a mistake, or is it meant to be like that?
The answer: it’s 100% intentional. Here’s why.
A Bit of History: From Function to Formality
In classic menswear, the chest pocket — often called the breast pocket — was fully functional. It was used for practical things: handwritten notes, calling cards, handkerchiefs. But over time, its purpose became more symbolic than utilitarian.
Enter the pocket square. The small square of fabric placed delicately in the breast pocket became a mark of style, sophistication, and even rebellion. But for most modern suits, this pocket is no longer designed for everyday use — it’s there to complete the silhouette, not to be filled with bulk.
Why It’s Sewn Shut
When you receive a suit, the chest pocket is usually sewn closed by default. This serves several purposes:
- Preserves the structure: Leaving it closed keeps the jacket’s clean lines intact during transport and display.
- Prevents sagging: Opening the pocket too early can cause distortion, especially with soft or stretchy fabrics.
- Maintains visual sharpness: An unused pocket keeps the chest area crisp and tailored — essential in a minimal, modern design like the Infinity Suit.
Can You Open It?
Yes — but do it carefully.
If you want to insert a pocket square (for a wedding, formal dinner, or simply style expression), you can use a seam ripper or small scissors to remove the threads. Just be sure to:
- Open it cleanly along the seam
- Avoid damaging the fabric around it
- Don’t overload it — pocket squares only, no wallets or sunglasses
Once opened, the pocket is functional. But keep in mind: any distortion will remain visible, especially on knit fabrics like ours.
The Monsieur Future Take
Our Infinity Suit comes with a stitched chest pocket by default — not by accident. It’s part of our modern tailoring philosophy: a suit that looks sharp out of the box, moves with your body, and keeps its structure over time.
That pocket? You decide whether to open it. Minimalist or expressive — we design, you style.
